The UVU Library Heats Things Up

This week is National Fire Prevention Week and we think this is the perfect time to share our UFRA and emergency services collections.

For several years, the Library's George Sutherland Archives have been collecting and digitizing photographs from UVU's Utah Fire and Rescue Academy. UFRA has been around since the 1960s, turning out firemen and -women to battle Utah's wildfires, find stranded people, and much more. You can see our growing collection of UFRA materials online on the Archives' website. (The Utah Fire Service History collection is just one of many digital collections the Archives have created.)

This week's display (located on the first floor) also features items from the UFRA collection and the Library's own emergency services collection.

If you'd like to learn more about firefighting and emergency services, you can find many books in section T on the fourth floor of the Library. You can check out as many books as you'd like for up to three weeks (with one renewal).

The UVU Library is Your Player Two

In 1889, Nintendo (yes, that Nintendo) was founded as a playing card company. We're celebrating their anniversary this week and next with a great display on the first floor.

We're also taking the opportunity to highlight some of our tech-y resources.

Adobe Cloud

Earlier this year, all of our Information Commons computers were updated with Adobe Cloud. You can create and edit your digital products on any of our 150+ computers. (We don't provide support, however. If you have questions about using the Adobe products, you will need to seek out some of the many tutorials available online.)

Computer Source

Curious about code? Get the latest tricks of the trade from Computer Source. Most of our databases can be used from home. All you need to do is log in with your UVID and UVLink password when prompted.

Text-A-Librarian

If you have a quick question about the Library, text it to us at 801.362.8176. We'll text you back as soon as we get your message.

The UVU Library is back!

Getting back in the habit of being a student can be tough, we know. So we gathered a bunch of books and ebooks for our display that can teach (or remind) you of the skills you need to succeed as a student. As always, if you have any questions about the UVU Library or doing research, please let us know. We're always happy to help.

Here are a couple more services that can help you this semester:

Study Rooms

We have 29 study rooms on the third, fourth, and fifth floors. You can reserve them on the Library's homepage for up to four hours within a 24 hour period. The rest of the rules and regulations are on the reservation page. These rooms are ideal for study groups and group meetings.

Textbook Reserve

The Library has a growing collection of textbooks, mostly for the 1000 and 2000 level classes. They can be checked out for up to two hours at a time. (We receive textbooks by donation, so we may not have the book or book edition that you need for every class.)

The UVU Library Remembers

Did you know...
That each of the librarians specializes in a different subject area? We can help you with your research projects for upper division classes.

2014 is the centennial year of the beginning of World War I. The summer of 1914 saw the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the declarations of war between Austria-Hungary, Serbia, Russia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Before the end of August 1914, most of the world was embroiled in fighting that would last for four years. This week, the UVU Library is sharing its collections of books, videos, and other materials about the war to end all wars.

Films on Demand

Films on Demand contains a growing collection of documentaries on almost every topic under the sun. it also includes an amazing collection of film reels and news reels from the twentieth century. Films on Demand brings history to life.

World War I Books

So many countries were involved in World War I that relevant books can be found throughout the world history section, section D, on the fourth floor. New books are being added this year due to so many titles being published in this centennial year.

The UVU Library Gets Poetic

Did you know...That many of the Library's EBSCO databases offer translation services?

100 years ago this week, one of the world's preeminent poets was born. Pablo Neruda still casts a long shadow in the world of poetry. This week, our display features his work and the work of other South American writers. We're also highlighting our literature research tools.

If you have questions about finding poetry or literature research, feel free to ask Annie Smith, the literature librarian.

MLA International Bibliography

The Modern Language Association (MLA) collects articles, book chapters, dissertations, and other works on languages and literature from around the world. It's not unusual to find articles in Polish, Japanese, or Spanish, though most articles are in English. This is the database your English professors use for their research.

South American Literature

The literature collection is organized according to the language the author wrote in. All Spanish and Portuguese literature can be found in section PQ. Next to the authors' works, you'll see biographies and explorations of their stories, poems, and plays by critics and experts.

The UVU Library Gets a Little Risque

Sex researcher Alfred Kinsey was born 120 years ago this week. Kinsey was a pioneering researcher who shocked the nation in the 1950s by revealing what happened behind America's closed doors and by exploding long-believed myths and sex and sexuality. Researchers have been building on and revising his work ever since. This week, the UVU Library shares books and resources on human sexuality.

Books about Sexuality*

HQ is packed with books about the human experience. Section HQ 12-449, on the fourth floor, is where the Library keeps books about sexuality, the history of sex research, and related books.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection

This database is a fantastic resource for up-to-date psychology research. Many of the articles are available in full text and you can research just about every aspect of sociology and human psychology.

Did you know...

That the Library protects your privacy when you check out books? We don't keep records of what you check out once you've returned what you borrowed. Also, questions you ask at the reference desk are kept as private as possible.

Learn Your Rights at the UVU Library

Fifty years ago this week, the United States Senate passed the Civil Rights Act. This Act banned any form of racial, gender, ethnic, or religion-based discrimination. It also prevented segregation in schools and stopped voter registration requirements from being selectively applied. The Act took effect when President Johnson signed it on July 2, 1964. This week, our display and collections will show the impact of the Civil Rights Act on American law and society.

American History in Video

What else can make history come to live like video? Watch newsreel and documentary footage of history as it happened in this remarkable collection.

Books about the Civil Rights Movement

Books about civil rights and the Civil Rights movement can be found throughout the American history section on the fourth floor, section E. Books in this section are arranged chronologically, so most of the books about the 1950s and 1960s will be next to each other.

Did you know...

That UVU's librarians all have master of library science degrees? They have years of experience that can help you with your research. Feel free to stop by the first floor reference desk or find your subject librarian, and ask about any library or research questions to have.

In recognition of Alzheimer's contributions to medicine, all of our displays and collection highlights will focus on the degenerative brain disease.

Books about Alzheimer's

The UVU Library has a growing collection of books about psychology and psychiatry. Because Alzheimer's is both a medical and a psychological condition, most books on the topic are can be found in section RC, on the fourth floor.

eBrary

This week marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy. Our displays and collection highlights will help you learn more about this historic event.

Books about World War II

Books in our history collection are arranged geographically, then chronologically; books about a country's history will be next to each other, arranged by date. The books about World War II have their own subsection on the history shelves. You can find most of our books about WWII in section D 731-838.

Literature Resource Center

The LRC is a great place to learn more about authors and their work. It includes biographies, lists of books and stories, and more.

Science Fiction Books

Literature is organized by author nationality, then chronologically. This makes it a little tricky to browse for books on the fourth floor. The best way to search is by author. Use the Literature Resource Center to find names or stop by the Reference Desk for suggestions. We're more than happy to help you find a good read!

Did you know...

The UVU Library Gets Poetic

The National Poetry Month festivities at the UVU Library continue this week. Earlier in the month, we welcomed UVU professors Alex Caldiero, Rick McDonald, Rob Carney, Steve Hall, and several students to read at our Poetry Matters event. You can watch on our YouTube Channel.

This week, we're putting our poetry resources on display.

Poetry

Poetry and books about poets can be found in section P on the fourth floor. Literature is organized by the author's nationality, then chronologically—so there is no one poetry section, as such. British, Canadian, Indian, American, French, Spanish, Latin (Roman) and Greek, Portuguese, Russian, and German writers all have their own sections. Within each section, you'll find writers arranged from the earliest times (usually the medieval period) to the present.

Project Muse

Project Muse is a great resource for contemporary literature research. It offers one of the best means of keeping tabs on the current poetry scene.

Deaf Studies at the UVU Library

Utah Valley University is hosting the sixth Biennial Deaf Studies Conference April 10-12, making this a great week to highlight our deaf studies collections and demonstrate how our new streaming resources can be used by the hearing impaired.

Deaf Studies Books

Section HV is packed with amazing books about society. It also contains many of our books about deaf education, deaf culture, and more. This section also includes books on American Sign Language and books for interpreters. (You can also find videos on learning sign in section HV of our media collection, on the second floor.)

Deaf Studies Research Guides

This guide contains a list of useful reference books, recommended databases, and vetted websites that can get you started on any research project pertaining to deafness and deaf society. Deaf studies is a broad area for research, so we also recommend stopping by the Library to talk to a librarian or contacting us online. We can help you narrow down your topic and save you some time.

Films on Demand...with transcripts!

We're very proud of our newest acquisition, Films on Demand. This streaming video package not only helps us bring you the latest in documentaries and educational videos, it also contains a lot of helpful features. One of these is that many of the films in the collection has a complete English language transcription. The transcription is searchable and portions of the text will highlight as the video progresses. To find the transcript, just look to the right of the video and click the Transcript tab. If no transcript tab is available, there is a list of segments (video portions) with summaries of the content.

The UVU Library Tries to Relax

With finals looming over all of us, it's easy to let stress take over. So this week we're featuring books and other resources that can help you cope with stress, recognize the risk factors, and deal with the effects.

Books about Stress

Books about stress can be found in a couple different places in the Library, depending on their focus. Some will discuss the risk factors for stress and suggest strategies for reducing the problem before it even starts. Other books will show the long term effects of stress on the mind and body. Still other books will cover how psychologists and health professionals treat severe stress.

Our book collection includes both print and digital titles. Digital titles can be downloaded for a brief time or browsed online.

PsycARTICLES

This database contains the entire American Psychological Association journal archive, all the way back to the very first issues of their journals. Because it is hosted by EBSCO, PsycARTICLES includes all of the search tools you're familiar with and uses the same search tricks you may have learned in your library workshop.

If you have any questions about the Library or research, don't hesitate to ask us--even if you think your question is silly. One important way to avoid stress is to start your research early and ask questions before you get frustrated and/or run up against your deadlines. Visit us at the Reference Desk or call us at (801) 863-8840.

The UVU Library Tries Not to Run Out of Gas

Forty years ago this week, the United States suffered a massive shortage of gas. Lines at gas stations stretched for blocks. Some stations rationed. Today, Americans are still looking for and debating about alternatives to fossil fuels. In recognition of the 1973-1974 Oil Crisis, this week the Library is focusing on its environmental studies collections and databases.

Environmental Studies Books

Many books about ecology can be found in section Q, but books that discuss conservation, sustainability, environmental impact, and related topics are located in section GE on the fourth floor.

Greenwire

Greenwire is a unique database that can be used to find the latest news in environmental policy, pollution, conservation and sustainability efforts, and more.

More ecology databases are available on our physical sciences subject page. If you have any questions using these resources, please contact our science librarian, Trevor Young.

All Roads Lead to Rome at the UVU Library

The Ides of March have come around again and this year marks the 2058th anniversary of the assassination of Julius Caesar. Many people may know enough about this event to quip "Et tu, Brute?" but come to the Library during Spring Break to learn the real history.

Historical Abstracts

This database specializes in articles by a wide variety of historians. Most articles are peer-reviewed. Some articles about ancient history are available, but most of this database focuses on history from the Renaissance to the present. We're listing it here because the Roman Empire has had such a lasting impact on politics, history, geography, law, art, and literature ever since its decline and fall.

JSTOR

In addition to articles about more recent history, JSTOR contains a wealth of articles about ancient history. The best part about using JSTOR is that you can read every article that you find through our subscription!

Roman History Books

Books are the best way to get in-depth knowledge of the Roman Empire. Learn about emperors, assassinations, conquests, sea battles, certain Egyptian queens, decadent Roman culture, and much more in section DG on the fourth floor.

The UVU Library Speaks Freely

Twenty-five years ago this week, controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe passed away. Nearly every one of Mapplethorpe's shows sparked outrage and debate about whether his photographs were art or pornography. This week, we're sharing some of our books about Mapplethorpe's life and work because one of the missions of the Library is to protect intellectual freedom. This means that the Library does not shy away from collecting material because it might offend someone.

Books about Free Speech

Books about the First Amendment and freedom of speech can be found throughout the Library's collection. Most of them are in our constitutional law section, but others are in art, literature, and history. These books look at important cases in American history in which the right to free speech was challenged. Many of them highlight the tension between the right of expression and offensive speech.

LexisNexis Academic

LexisNexis Academic is a popular legal database that contains thousands of district, federal, and Supreme Court cases; legal articles; state and federal laws; and much more. It also contains a news archive that goes back to the mid-1970s. The database's interface is complex, so please feel free to visit us at the Reference Desk if you have questions.

Photography Books

Section TR contains our books about photography and collections of photographers' work. You can find more Mapplethorpe here, as well as work by Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, and many others.

The UVU Library Follows the Money

Forty years ago this week, the Watergate scandal broke, changing the way Americans perceived their government forever. Most of our students today weren't even born at the time and have little idea about how the story evolved from a late night break in to the resignation of a president. All this week, we will be featuring books and databases that can help show (or remind) people what happened all those years ago.

American History in Video

This unique database streams newsreel, documentary, and other video on a wide range of topics in American history. American History in Video is available on and off campus so that you can watch history as it happened.

Nixon Collection

We have books about all American presidents in our collection. But because of Watergate and other scandals, we have shelves of books about Richard Nixon. They can be found on the fourth floor, in section E 885.

If you have any questions about accessing these resources, please call us at (801) 864-8840. We're happy to help!

The Library Won't Hurt a Bit

60 years ago saw the first field test of the polio vaccine, the first step towards eradicating the terrible disease. To highlight this important moment in medical history, the UVU Library created a display about vaccination and will be sharing useful resources.

Health Source: Consumer Edition

Vaccinations are the subject of many myths. The articles in Health Source: Consumer Edition can show you the latest research and help you sort fact from fiction.

Public Health Books

Section RA on the fourth floor contains our collection of books about public health. This broad category includes books on health communication, vaccination programs, health education, and many more topics.

As always, you can ask for help with your research questions at the Reference Desk, call us at (801) 863-8840, or chat with us using LiveHelp. Debbie Short, our health sciences librarian, can also help you with advanced research.

The UVU Library Makes Friends

With Facebook celebrating its tenth birthday this week, we wanted to share the books we've collected about friendship and the impact that social networking has had on our relationships. We put up a display on the first floor with the most relevant books, and we hope you'll stop by to take a look. Here are some other resources we have for doing research on friendship and social networking:

Books about Friendship and Social Interaction

Books about friendship are available in several locations in the Library, but most of them can be found on the fourth floor in section HM.

Sociological Collection

This database contains research touching on just about every aspect of social life. Researchers have been looking at how social networking and social media has changed the way we communicate, resolve conflicts, and make friends since before Facebook became an Internet phenomena. Most of that research can be found in Sociological Collection.

We'd like to be your friends! Follow the Library on Facebook and Twitter for news and highlights from the Library, book recommendations, pictures, and more.

Beatlemania at the UVU Library

All book displays are on the first floor.
On February 7, 1964, the Beatles landed in the United States to begin their first US tour. We're celebrating this milestone in music history by featuring some of our music research sources all this week.

Music Collection

You can check out as many books from our regular collection (fourth floor) as you can carry away for three weeks at a time. Our music books--which include biographies, histories, music theory texts, and more--can all be found in section M.

Music Reference Books

Our reference books are selected to help you get started on your research. Many of our books about popular music can be found in this collection, located on the first floor. Music books are in section M. One of the best sources of information about popular music, The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll, can be found here. Most reference books check out for three days at a time.

Online Music Reference Books

We are very proud of our online reference collection. The above link takes you to a page that lists our books by subject. Just click music to see all of our available titles. Our collection focuses on classical music, but you can also find information about popular music and musicians.

As always, if you have questions about your research or need help getting started, please contact us at the Reference Desk. We can be reached by phone at (801) 863-8840. You can also get in touch via text, chat, and email (Get Help details).

The UVU Library Goes Quiet

On February 2, 1914, Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character made his screen debut. Even though he only spoke once, in 1940's The Great Dictator, the Little Tramp made us laugh and cry without saying a word. The first thirty years of cinema were years of amazing technological achievement. So, in honor of silent movies and Charlie Chaplin's legacy, this week we're sharing our collections of silent movie history.

Silent Movies

Most of our silent movies are in one location in our media collection on the second floor, but a few are available mixed with the other genres like comedy, drama, and the foreign films. You can search the Library's catalog here to find nearly every silent movie we have. Due to the popularity of our film collection, you can only check out five videos at a time for three days at a time.

Silent Movie History

Learn more about the fascinating history of silent movies and the early cinema from our books on the fourth floor in section PN 1995.75. Actor and director biographies can be found a little further down the shelf.

Quiet Floors

As we're honoring silent movies, this seems like a good week to remind students that the third, fourth, and fifth floors are quiet study floors.

The UVU Library Gets a Little Surreal

This week in January sees the anniversaries of the deaths of two innovative artists: Edvard Munch and Salvador Dalí. To celebrate their contributions to the world of art, we wanted to highlight some of our art resources.

There is also a display of books about Dalí and Munch on the first floor, but it won't last long!

Adobe Photoshop

You might not think of the library as a place to go to create art, but we have offered Adobe Photoshop (and Adobe's Creative Suite) on our Mac computers for years. Soon, we will have access to Adobe Cloud.

Art Collection

We have hundreds of books about art and artists on the fourth floor of the Library. They can be found in section N. Art books are arranged by medium, so books on sculpture are in one section and architecture in another. Within each section, books are subdivided into sections on history or technique or schools of art. Most of our books about surrealism (Dalí) and expressionism (Munch), will be in section ND with our books on painting.

Grove Art Online

Created by Oxford University Press, Grove Art Online is a terrific reference source for art. If you need quick definitions or explanations of art terms or want a quick biography of an artist, Grove is the best place to get started.

The UVU Library Serves Up Information Fast

Even though it's the second week of classes, we're already seeing students hard at work on their first research papers and projects. To help them, we wanted to share a few services and collections that can make the task easier and faster.

EBooks

The UVU Library has been collecting eBooks for years now. We have hundreds of reference and academic titles waiting to be read. Due to publisher restrictions, some books cannot be downloaded--but they can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection, even late at night. The eBook collections page includes collections the Library subscribes to as well as free collections from around the world.

If you have any questions about using the eBooks, please call us at (801) 863-8840.

EBSCO eBook Collection

EBSCO's eBook Collection is one of our newest. We purchased a subscription to their academic package last fall, which gives us access to thousands of new titles in a wide variety of disciplines.

Interlibrary Loan

If you run across a book or article in our databases or in a citation and the UVU Library doesn't have a copy, we can get one for you through our interlibrary loan service. All you need to do is create an account, tell us what you need, and we take care of the rest. Unlike some other universities, we don't charge anything for this service. Articles take only two business days to arrive; books about a week to 10 days, depending on the mail.
