The UVU Library Goes Quiet

On February 2, 1914, Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character made his screen debut. Even though he only spoke once, in 1940's The Great Dictator, the Little Tramp made us laugh and cry without saying a word. The first thirty years of cinema were years of amazing technological achievement. So, in honor of silent movies and Charlie Chaplin's legacy, this week we're sharing our collections of silent movie history.

Silent Movies

Most of our silent movies are in one location in our media collection on the second floor, but a few are available mixed with the other genres like comedy, drama, and the foreign films. You can search the Library's catalog here to find nearly every silent movie we have. Due to the popularity of our film collection, you can only check out five videos at a time for three days at a time.

Silent Movie History

Learn more about the fascinating history of silent movies and the early cinema from our books on the fourth floor in section PN 1995.75. Actor and director biographies can be found a little further down the shelf.

Quiet Floors

As we're honoring silent movies, this seems like a good week to remind students that the third, fourth, and fifth floors are quiet study floors.

The UVU Library Gets a Little Surreal

This week in January sees the anniversaries of the deaths of two innovative artists: Edvard Munch and Salvador Dalí. To celebrate their contributions to the world of art, we wanted to highlight some of our art resources.

There is also a display of books about Dalí and Munch on the first floor, but it won't last long!

Adobe Photoshop

You might not think of the library as a place to go to create art, but we have offered Adobe Photoshop (and Adobe's Creative Suite) on our Mac computers for years. Soon, we will have access to Adobe Cloud.

Art Collection

We have hundreds of books about art and artists on the fourth floor of the Library. They can be found in section N. Art books are arranged by medium, so books on sculpture are in one section and architecture in another. Within each section, books are subdivided into sections on history or technique or schools of art. Most of our books about surrealism (Dalí) and expressionism (Munch), will be in section ND with our books on painting.

Grove Art Online

Created by Oxford University Press, Grove Art Online is a terrific reference source for art. If you need quick definitions or explanations of art terms or want a quick biography of an artist, Grove is the best place to get started.

The UVU Library Serves Up Information Fast

Even though it's the second week of classes, we're already seeing students hard at work on their first research papers and projects. To help them, we wanted to share a few services and collections that can make the task easier and faster.

EBooks

The UVU Library has been collecting eBooks for years now. We have hundreds of reference and academic titles waiting to be read. Due to publisher restrictions, some books cannot be downloaded--but they can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection, even late at night. The eBook collections page includes collections the Library subscribes to as well as free collections from around the world.

If you have any questions about using the eBooks, please call us at (801) 863-8840.

EBSCO eBook Collection

EBSCO's eBook Collection is one of our newest. We purchased a subscription to their academic package last fall, which gives us access to thousands of new titles in a wide variety of disciplines.

Interlibrary Loan

If you run across a book or article in our databases or in a citation and the UVU Library doesn't have a copy, we can get one for you through our interlibrary loan service. All you need to do is create an account, tell us what you need, and we take care of the rest. Unlike some other universities, we don't charge anything for this service. Articles take only two business days to arrive; books about a week to 10 days, depending on the mail.
