Online Music Databases

Did you know that the UVU Library offers several online tools for music researchers? All of the following databases can be access from the Library's complete list of databases.

Classical Scores Library

The Classical Scores Library offers access to a growing collection of scores and libretti for operas, symphonies, sonatas, and many more. You can locate scores and libretti by composer, instrument, time period, key, and genre.

Scores are for individual use only, and not for performance.

Grove Music Online

Grove Music Online contains the full text version of three important music reference books. It is best used to locate biographical and background information on musicians, instruments, music history, and more. Articles are thoroughly documented.

International Index to Music Periodicals

The IIMP is a terrific source for research about music and music instruction. It contains full text for many of the journals and magazines (though not all) that it indexes. It includes both peer-reviewed and non peer-reviewed articles.

Naxos Music Library

The Naxos Music Library is a unique resource that allows you to listen to (but not download) complete works of classical music.

For help using Naxos Music Library in classes, please contact the Reference Desk at x8840.

If you have any questions about locating scores, recordings, or research about music, please contact our music librarian, Keith Rowley, at x8780.

Media Equipment Available for Check Out

Need to update your camera?
Check one out from us!

Did you know that the Library has equipment like still and video cameras, microphones, laptops, and projectors available for check out?

We've been growing our collection of media equipment since we opened the new Library in July 2008. Our current collection is divided into smaller collections for students, digital media students, and faculty.

Media equipment may be checked out for four hours at a time, but cannot be checked out over night. Faculty can arrange for a longer check out time and off-campus check out with Tony Jaskowick, our media equipment manager.

For more information about media equipment, contact Tony Jaskowick at x8675 or view our media equipment policy page.

I Love the Library Week

Today kicks off I Love the Library Week.

During the next five days, we will offer all comers a chance to spin the prize wheel between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Prizes include fine waivers and Library swag like pencils and T-shirts.

On our Facebook page we will post images from our history, from our earliest days to the present, in partnership with the George Sutherland Archives.

This week's display will challenge readers to take a chance on a blind date with a book.

We hope you stop by!

New Edition of The Library Connection Published

We just published a new edition of the Library's newsletter for faculty, The Library Connection. Read it online here. This month's issue features articles on how to use OneSearch, how to incorporate information literacy skills into assignments, a bibliography of books about digital media, and more!

Circulation Policies for Faculty

By Annie Smith, Reference/Instruction Librarian

The Library's circulation policies (rules about how long you can keep items you've checked out, the schedule of fines and fees, etc.) have evolved to try and make sure that everyone has equitable access to our materials.

You can find all of our circulation policies on the Library's site, on the policies page. Faculty have a few more options when it comes to checking out materials than students:

  • Books check out for sixteen weeks, but cannot be renewed without re-checking them out.
  • Items can be placed on reserve (physical or digital) for students to read or view.
  • Proxy borrowers can be designated to check materials out for you.
If you have any questions, please contact the Circulation Department at (801) 863-8886.

Scheduling a Room

By Annie Smith, Reference/Instruction Librarian

One of the Library's study rooms
There are two options for faculty to schedule rooms. Faculty may schedule rooms for themselves via our online calendar. To schedule a study room, visit our study room page. To schedule a library classroom, visit the Library's instruction page. Both pages include information about what's available in the various rooms, and the rules and regulations for scheduling. Faculty may also contact a librarian to schedule a room for them. This second option is available for scheduling study rooms weeks in advance for faculty-student appointments.

OneSearch

By Annie Smith, Reference/Instruction Librarian

Last fall, the Library introduced a brand new way to search its collections. OneSearch allows you to search across many of our databases and the Library's catalog to locate books, articles, videos, CDs, music scores, maps, and archival materials. We've added OneSearch on the Library's homepage, in the upper right corner. The subject specific databases and the Library's catalog can still be used separately; to access them, click on their tabs next to the OneSearch tab.

We've found, since we adopted OneSearch, that certain parts of the research process have gotten easier. First, you no longer have to search multiple databases in order to research interdisciplinary topics. Second, full text copies of articles are much more accessible in that you no longer have to use Journals by Title in order to track down those copies; the links are often directly available in OneSearch.

Because OneSearch can do so much, it can be a little overwhelming when a simple search returns thousands, or even millions, of items. We've put together a pair of tutorials that can help you use OneSearch more efficiently. The tutorials, which cover narrowing and expanding your search, can be found here, on our tutorials page.

Librarians Are Here to Help

Faculty often call upon the librarians to teach introductory or advanced workshops on research for their students, but did you know that there are other ways that librarians can help?

Librarians can:

  • Order books and videos for the collection in your subject areas. (Suggest a Book or contact your subject librarian)
  • Help you design meaningful research assignments for your students.
  • Assist you with your own research.
  • Have books, videos, or other materials delivered to your office.
  • Create research guides for your classes that will guide students to the best resources.
  • Archive documents and other materials for posterity.
  • Answer questions about electronic reserve, interlibrary loan, and other library services.
As we often emphasize in our workshops, librarians love questions. So, please, ask us anything. We're happy to help!

Welcome back!

Welcome back, UVU faculty! As we kick off a new semester, please remember that the Library is here to help. We'd love to help your students by creating custom research guides, helping to design library assignments, and by teaching the basics of library research. If you have materials you'd like to place on reserve--documents, books, videos, etc.--we can help with that, too.

This spring, we are also running our award winning LibraryCraft, an online game designed to introduce your students to the Library's website. For more information, please contact Annie Smith at x8752 or smithan@uvu.edu.

Faculty Book Delivery

Did you know that you can have Library materials delivered to you in your office, anywhere on the Orem Campus? To request an item for delivery, fill in this short form: http://www.uvu.edu/library/faculty/delivery.php.

Books are usually delivered within 24 hours of sending a request. (Requests submitted over the weekend or during holidays may be delayed.) If you request an item that is already checked out to someone else, a hold will be placed on it. We will deliver the item as soon as it returns to the Library.

For questions about the delivery service, contact J. O'Day at x7168 or by email at odayja at uvu.edu.
